Review: The Killers - Runaway

Killers Runaways

The Killers quickly became popular on the tough-to-crack music scene with their debut album Hot Fuss, released in 2004. Music listeners quickly became obsessed with the likes of Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me and before anyone could predict it, The Killers became the new indie-rock band to try and beat. Since then we have seen another two albums, both of which were of the same brilliant quality to their original, although critics often claimed that they failed to measure up to the infamous Mr. Brightside, and now, four years since their last album release, The Killers are preparing for the release of their new album Battle Born, which of course means there is a new single to listen to!

The track, Runaways, was aired for the first time last week by Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, and is now available to listen to online.

Front man Brandon Flowers revealed, during a brief interview with Zane Lowe, that he was quietly confident that fans would react well to this new release. It seems that Flowers’ confidence was indeed warranted: the track is brilliant, and I love it. After five or so listens, I’m still not bored of hearing the almost-techy-sounds in the background, that meet delicate guitar riffs, over the typically brilliant Killers lyrics. It is without doubt the kind of song that will be sung back to them at some point in the near future. It offers a familiar Killers sound accompanied with the reliable vocals of Flowers as we’re taken on a romantic journey through the lead singer’s eyes. As comeback singles go, this is definitely a strong one that will catapult The Killers back onto the music scene after the frequent - and, may I add, unfair - criticism of their more recent albums. It might have taken four years to get here since the likes of dance track Human was released, and the other unique sounds on their last album, but the four years wait has definitely bought back The Killers as we know and love them.

The band are returning to the UK later this year to play the great and powerful V Festival in August - definitely an act worth making the journey for! In addition to their live appearance, fans can also look forward to the release of Battle Born, which is scheduled to hit the UK on September 17th this year; and, given the spectacular array of impressive producers that have been involved with the album, in addition to the amazing first single and the fact that the guys have had four long years to work on this, we here at Popfodder are expecting something pretty spectacular, and, after listening to this single, I am quietly confident that we don’t be disappointed with what we find on their album…
